I have created this section so that I could place all of Steele's Wing Command OPTs, which are just extracted Origin-made models and textures with a few modification. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, because the results are great, but I am trying to organize these OPTs.
Creator Steele Game: XWA Only Excalibar Review Done by Ypoknons, 10/09/1999 Wing Commander! Good ol'Wing Commander. For those of you who don't know Wing Commander well, the Excalibar was the experiment fighter which was very powerful. Later in Wing Commander 4, the Excalibar got a little downgrade to make it a production machine. The OPT itself, is very good. Detailed textures (including the Steele Aerospace logo and the works Lt. Steele), but they are a little drab. The engine glows are fine, and the weaponry is very powerful: 4 Turbolasers and 2 Turbo Ion Cannons. The only thing that prevents it from getting a high mark is are the drab textures, but other than that, this is a great OPT. Note that a new version of it is out using the textures of the Excalibar of Secret Ops. it's even better than this one. Score: Screenshots
Bearcat Review Done by Ypoknons, 11/11/1999 The Bearcat was my favorite ship in Wing Commander 4, and this OPT, though not perfect, is very good. The Bearcat was designed as an interceptor, with the latest Ion engine technology, but the problem was that the Ion engines weren't very reliable. However, the good points of the Bearcat is that it is heavily armored and shielded as well as exceptionally fast and maneuverable. The 4 Tachyon guns weren't anything to dismiss casually either. Anyhow, this OPT keeps the original Bearcat's excellent look, and gives it the correct armament (4 Turbolasers in palce of 4 Tacyhon guns), and generally looks great. My only complaint was the cockpit somehow shrunk. That, to me takes off its charm a little, but still, it'swell worth the download. Score: Screenshots
Dragon Review Done by Ypoknons, 11/11/1999 Dragon! These extremely expensive pieces of hardware were the ultimate in fighter design. Fast, heavily armored and shielded, with the ability to cloak and afterburn indefinitely, couple with the meanest gun armament around and a pair of light torpados, these things were... Doom. The only drawback is that its not as maneuverable as most light fighters, it still is a deadly combination. The OPT has been toned down due to XWA's limitations, but is still a fearsome beast. The drab, grayish Origin textures are replaced with a comparatively attractive blueish texture. With the Dragon, you have the power to wipe out entire fleets of ships! Beware, pilot. Dismissed. Panther Review Done by Ypoknons, 11/11/1999 The Panther, though not the most advanced, is the best ship in Wing Commander Prophecy. Its excellent maneuverability (produced by the "backpack" on the top of the ship, which is supposed to rotate according to your controls), couple with above average everything else, makes it a deadly mahcine, preferred by many. And the OPT of it doesn't lose any of its charm, except for a still yaw booster. The armament of 2 Turbolasers and 2 Ions is dead on, as is everything else. Hmmm.... What are you waiting for? Vampire Review Done by Ypoknons, 2/1/2000 Anyone whose played Wing Command Prophecy can remember the Vampire. All ups, no downs. Although the Panther can out-manuver it, bit can out-gun and overtake it. The weapons close enough dead on: 4 Turbolasers and 2 Ions for 4 Tachyons and 2 Ions. The textures are a bit blurred, but just fine. I Guess converting textures aren't much of a problem. It looks great, flies great, shoots great. I think if possible, I'd like Steele to get some cockpits for his craft. Score: Screenshots When I get less busy, I'll have one here.
